Is An Organic Baby Mattress Better? Absolutely!

Are Organic Baby Mattresses Better?

The answer is absolutely!

The main problem with non-organic baby mattresses is the material used in them during the manufacturing process. Cotton as a crop is heavily sprayed with pesticides and then cotton material is treated with chemicals to finish it. The mattresses are then treated with flame retardant - which sounds good in theory - but is a serious health hazard. These things combined can very detrimental to babies as they are just more susceptible to the harmful fumes and toxins released by these chemicals.

It is also important to note that a regular crib mattress generally is composed of a foam core with vinyl covering. Studies have shown that mice on this mattress have a reduction of 26% of their airflow.

A toxic, chemical laden mattress can cause irritation to nose, throat, eyes and can cause asthma like reactions or difficulty with breathing. This could be a major factor in SIDS. Many studies have confirmed the link between SIDS and chemicals but the crib industry is very large and keeps promoting cheap synthetic mattresses.

Natural Rubber Crib Mattress - What Does Natural Rubber Mean?

Thinking about buying a natural rubber crib mattress for your baby? What does natural rubber mean?

The major commercial source of natural rubber is the Para Rubber Tree which produces a white milky substance called latex.

Natural rubber can be used to designate any product that has natural rubber in it. Blends of 60% synthetic are stated as natural rubber (they do contain some natural rubber). Many companies claim they have an ALL Natural Rubber. The only problem is many companies did not test it to verify that it is indeed ALL-NATURAL and CHEMICAL-FREE.

Our rubber used in our Dunlap process is tested 100% chemical-free by Latexco (a third party agency). Only natural vegetable based soaps are used for washing. Our firm 100% Sri Lankan natural rubber does not contain fillers or toluene like the Indian rubber.

How Our Rubber Mattress Is Made

The 4" natural rubber core of the mattress is surrounded by an inner wool layer quilted to an organic cotton outer for natural flame retardency, water-resistance, bacterial resistance and dust mite control.

Our organic cotton used for wrapping the rubber core is long staple and hand-picked (no vegetation). Our pure wool is sheared off healthy, happy organically raised sheep. These high quality materials are what set our organic crib mattresses apart from the less quality mattresses made from inferior U.S. cottons and wools.

Our mattresses do not measure over 6" in total height. The higher the mattress, the less safe it is as your baby grows.

Our rubber baby mattresses meet all CPSC guidelines.

Creating An Organic Nursery For Your Baby

Steps To Create A Healthy Nursery
Have you or someone you know excitedly made preparations for your new baby's arrival by painting, installing new carpeting, and buying a crib with a brand-new synthetic or foam mattress for their nursery. So many well-intentioned mothers do when in fact they are doing more harm to their babies without realizing it.
Unless a mother knows what is causing the problem or knows what symptoms to look for, the baby will continue to be exposed to these harmful elements. Thankfully, there are ways to avoid or correct these problems through non-toxic approaches. Here are a few simple steps:

The Right Paint
Mothers first expose their unborn babies to chemical fumes when painting and breathing in the toxic fumes. The baby is then exposed to the same chemical fumes after birth. Babies who are affected may experience central nervous system irritation resulting in increased agitation, tension and decreased feeding.
Paints and finishes release low levels of toxic gases into the air for years after application. But with the development of non-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints, we are now able to buy toxic-free paint. Just ask for it at your local paint store.
The Right Carpet
As inviting and soft to the touch as carpet may be, it is a reservoir of mold, mildew and dust mites. When I was growing up, we had shag carpet in all of our rooms, including our bedrooms, because it was the latest fad. Underneath lay beautiful hardwood floors. We were cultivating a nice collection of who knows what.
As a first step in improving your nursery, remove any old carpet. Avoid replacing with new carpet as it contains harmful chemicals releasing toxic fumes into the air. If possible replace with hardwood flooring if it doesn't already exist. If carpet is a must, choose completely untreated carpeting with natural latex or jute backing.
The Right Furniture
When furnishing your baby's nursery, consider solid wood furniture. Formaldehyde in the glues used during manufacturing continually out gas for the entire life of the piece.
Most Amish furniture is made from solid wood and very Eco-friendly. Also, try to avoid new plastic changing tables or other plastic furniture as they also release toxic fumes for many years.
The Right Mattress & Bedding
When shopping for a mattress, consider a natural organic baby mattress.
At http://www.heavenandnatureorganics.com/, we only offer the best organic baby & crib mattresses on the market. Our mattresses exclusively from Pure-Rest Organics come in various sizes to fit cribs, portacribs, bassinets and cradles. All of our mattresses are tested 100% chemical-free and non-toxic.
Complete your crib with all natural organic baby bedding also from Pure Rest. We offer a nice selection of organic baby bedding including, fitted sheets, blankets, bumpers and bumper covers, comforters, crib sets & more.
In a study conducted by Anderson Laboratories, six different brands of waterproof crib mattress covers were found to emit toxic fumes. One was made of polyolefin and the other five were made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and covered with polyester or cotton.
If you must use a non-organic baby mattress, at least consider using an organic mattress cover or puddle pad. Though this is not a 100% solution, you are providing some barrier between your baby and the mattress.
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of a safe and toxic-free nursery for your baby. Babies deserve a healthy & happy start in life. We hope you will take these few simple steps in providing your baby with a safe and healthy environment. You and your baby will sleep better!
